Montenegrin authorities have arrested Roman Ziemian, co-founder of the alleged cryptocurrency fraud scheme FutureNet, in connection with a $21 million scam. Ziemian, who was residing in Podgorica under an assumed identity, was taken into custody following a statement from the Police Directorate.
Ziemian faces multiple charges including fraud, money laundering, and theft from both South Korean and Polish authorities. The South Korean government has indicated that Ziemian could face a life sentence if convicted. Following his arrest, Montenegrin police confiscated several items and devices believed to be related to his alleged criminal activities.
The co-founder of FutureNet, a multilevel marketing platform associated with the cryptocurrency FuturoCoin (FTO), Ziemian is set to appear before the High Court in Podgorica. The court will determine whether he will be extradited to South Korea or Poland. His situation parallels that of Do Kwon, co-founder of Terraform Labs, who is also detained in Montenegro facing charges related to the $40 billion collapse of the Terra/LUNA ecosystem in May 2022.
FutureNet, launched by Ziemian and Stephan Morgenstern in 2018, promoted itself as a multilevel marketing venture linked to the cryptocurrency FuturoCoin. However, the value of FuturoCoin has significantly declined, leading to allegations of fraudulent activity. In March 2019, Poland’s Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) issued a warning about FutureNet, classifying it as a potential pyramid scheme.
